W. Wrigley, the universitys senior vice president for external affairs. Allen will be responsible for maintaining and advancing the universitys relationship with the Athens-Clarke County government and community. The appointment was effective Jan. 15.
Establishing a program that gives more intentional guidance to the important area of town-gown relations has been a top priority for me, Wrigley says. There is no one better suited than Pat Allen to develop a program that formalizes and nurtures the universitys ongoing relationship with Athens-Clarke County.
This position will serve a most significant function for the university--linking the many aspects of our academic, research and public service programs with our host community, says President Michael F. Adams. Pat Allen is particularly well-equipped to perform this function, and I very much look forward to working with him in this capacity.
Allen has been interim president of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce since August. He retired in December 2001 after 25 years with Bank of America and its predecessor organizations, NationsBank and the Citizens and Southern National Bank. He was president of the C&S Bank of Athens from 1988 to 1992.
He has a long record of community leadership and service. He is a director of the University of Georgia Research Foundation and is chair of the Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Foundation. He was chair of the Athens-Clarke County Unification Commission in 1989-90, on the board of St. Marys Healthcare System, Inc., from 1993 to 2000 and its chair from 1998 to 2000, campaign chair for the United Way of Northeast Georgia in 1998, and has been chair of the trustees of Athens First United Methodist Church since 1996.
Pat will provide information to community officials about the needs and priorities of the university, will develop opportunities for faculty and students to offer service and support to the local community, and will be the go-to person for information and two-way communication in the town-gown relationship, Wrigley says. It is a position that has been needed, and we are glad to be able to secure the services of Pat Allen to advance this important relationship.
