An analysis of the development of environmental thought in relation to the notion of cultural landscapes and the technosphere is available now in Ecología de Paisajes.
Written in Spanish, the book has specific topics to help Latin Americanists comprehend the switch of conservation paradigms from biodiversity to biocultural diversity. One of the book’s co-authors is Fausto Sarmiento, director of UGA’s Office of International Education and adjunct associate professor of geography.
The textbook of landscape ecology provides a framework of this modern discipline for the Latin American audience.
The work is a transdisciplinary effort in the total human ecosystem concept. It treats environmental issues as they relate to Latin American examples of the landscapes of tropical mountains in the Andes and the grazing areas of the Pampas. It provides valuable information on cybernetics, systems theory, and chaos theory as applied to the cultural/natural whole of anthropogenic features in mediterranean, tropandean and pampean landscapes. The evolution of the concept is in many instances a reflection of UGA’s efforts in ecological and environmental research generated by the late Eugene Odum, Frank Golley and other ecologists at UGA, according to Sarmiento.
