Fake diplomas easy to obtain
A yearlong investigation has found it is easy to obtain and use counterfeit diplomas for job applications and promotions. The undercover investigation, conducted by the U.S. General Accounting Office, found it was hard to determine how useful these fake diplomas really are. Some people like to hang them on the wall as a novelty item, while others go so far as trying to use them when applying for jobs. The company that was investigated has been reported to the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Postal Service for further investigation.
Colleges get SEVIS extension
Higher education institutions have been given a two-week extension before they must start using the new Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, the database set up to track foreign students at U.S. colleges. U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service officials made the decision after acknowledging that many colleges are having difficulty with the new system. Colleges were originally to begin using the system by Jan. 30 but have now been given until Feb. 15. At that point INS will accept only the SEVIS version of student visa forms.
