Awards on May 19 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The luncheon ceremony will honor the outstanding works in radio, television and new media that were broadcast during 2002.
“We are delighted that Ms. Walters will join us on this important day,” says Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards program. “Whether presenting the vital news of the day, introducing viewers to interesting and influential individuals with her interviews, or exploring contemporary culture on The View, her work exemplifies excellence, the single criterion applied in selecting winners of the Peabody Award.” Walters received a Peabody Award in 1995 for her profile of Christopher Reeve.
As Peabody host she will join a list of media luminaries, including Bill Moyers, Ted Koppel, Christiane Amanpour and Walter Cronkite, who was last year’s host.
Walters joined ABC News in 1976 as the first woman to co-host the network news.
In 1990, she was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Hall of Fame “for being acknowledged worldwide as one of television’s most respected interviewers and journalists.”
She is the recipient of honorary doctoral degrees from Sarah Lawrence, her alma mater, as well as Ohio State University, Temple University, Marymount College, Wheaton College, Hofstra University and Ben-Gurion University in Jerusalem.
The announcement of this year’s Peabody winners will be made at a press conference and live via satellite on April 2, at 5:45 p.m. from Georgia Public Television Headquarters in Atlanta.
