At its February meeting the Board of Regents approved four new members of the board of the Peabody Awards program: Bel Hernandez and Robert Levi of Los Angeles, Johnathan Rogers of Washington, D.C., and Joanne Ostrow of Denver.
Hernandez is the co-founder and editor of Latinheat magazine, the only Latino entertainment industry publication highlighting Latinos in all aspects of the industry. Hernandez began her career in entertainment as an actor on stage, screen and television before founding Latinheat in 1992. A frequent consultant on the subject of Latinos in entertainment, she was a panelist at the Smithsonian Picture Gallery Hispanic Heritage Month Film Festival.
Levi, recently retired from Turner Broadcasting Systems, is an acquisition and distribution consultant to the media. He succeeded Ted Turner as general manager of the TBS superstation and spent 32 years with the Turner organization. When he retired he was president for worldwide program planning and acquisitions. Levi has served on the boards of both the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Ostrow has been the television and radio critic for the Denver Post since 1984. A graduate of Syracuse Universitys Newhouse School of Public Communications, she has published in the Los Angeles Times, the Miami Herald, and USA Weekend and previously was a reporter for Broadcasting magazine in Washington and New York. For five years she was also co-host of The Sunday Morning Media Show, a Denver call-in radio program focused on local and national media.
Rodgers became president of the Discovery Networks, U.S., in March 1996 and retired from the company in March 2002. Cable channels in the Discovery Networks include the Discover Channel, the Learning Channel, Animal Planet, Travel Channel and many others.
Prior to joining Discovery Communications, Rodgers held a variety of executive positions during a 20-year career with CBS. He began his career as a print journalist, working at Sports Illustrated and Newsweek magazines.
We are delighted to secure the services of such a distinguished group, says Horace Newcomb, Peabody Awards director. Our board of 16 changes over time to ensure a variety of viewpoints and a range of expertise. The true significance of the George Foster Peabody Award results from the experience, knowledge and integrity of our members. The individuals named today secure our recognition as the most important award in the media industries. |
