Development. Smith has been interim director of the office since last August when the previous director, Patt Cain, left UGA for another job. The corporate and foundation relations office helps obtain financial support from businesses and private foundations for UGAs educational programs, research and service. Funds raised through the office are used for such purposes as scholarships and fellowships for students, teaching support for faculty members, and acquisition of equipment and materials. In the last fiscal year corporate and foundation sources provided approximately $21.3 million to the University of Georgia and the UGA Foundation. Smith joined the office in 2000 and was associate director before becoming interim director. She came to UGA from the Medical College of Georgia where she was also director of corporate and foundation relations and was a senior public relations officer. Smith is president of the Georgia Educational Advancement Council, a member of the Atlanta chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and serves on the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce College Relations Committee.
