Advisory Committee of the Advanced Photon Source.
The committee is charged with advising the director of the APS regarding requests for beam time at the facility by new and established users and with evaluating the scientific output and facility use. The committee also reviews special proposals requiring more beam time than usual and assists with the development of policies as well as other issues as appropriate.
The APS is the premier national synchrotron radiation research facility, located at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. Argonne is operated by the University of Chicago under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy. SREL is located on the Savannah River Site, a DOE facility in South Carolina.

James C. Cobb, Spalding Professor of History, received a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant in U.S. Studies at the Institute of English and American Studies, University of Vienna.
While in Austria from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16, 2002, Cobb lectured to American Studies classes about American literature and Southern literary culture, advised graduate students and gave a talk to the history faculty. He also gave a lecture about Southern music at the University of Innsbruck.

International Exchange of Scholars, the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program seeks to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Judith Ortiz Cofer, the Franklin Professor of English and Creative Writing, delivered a keynote address to the National Council of Teachers of English meeting at the opening banquet of NCTE’s 92nd annual convention, held in Atlanta.
The NCTE is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the English language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession. It currently has some 75,000 members and subscribers in the United States and other countries.

Head football coach Mark Richt was named Regional Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association.
Richt was selected from Region Two--one of only five regions nationally. He led Georgia to an 11-1 record and the

Southeastern Conference championship in only his second year as head coach. He has a career record at UGA of 19-5.
“What makes this award so special is that this is the only coach of the year award voted on exclusively by the coaches themselves,” said Grant Teaff, AFCA executive director. “The winners are selected by the coaches they compete with and against on a daily basis.”

Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
