Ramsey Student Center is named a Red Cross emergency shelter

The Ramsey Student Center has been named an official Red Cross shelter in case of local or state emergencies.
Dena Roth, a program specialist with Environmental Safety Services, undertook the effort to certify Ramsey.
She says that first she investigated the possibility that some other location on campus had already been certified, but found the UGA campus did not have a Red Cross shelter.
“It just seemed like a natural thing for us to do,” she says. “I identified a place, and Jane Russell at the Ramsey Center was proactive with it.”
The size of Ramsey means it can be used for large-scale emergencies, like coastal evacuations during hurricanes. Roth’s initial concern, however, was for campus emergencies. She says Ramsey will be able to serve various emergency needs for students, such as shelter if heat failed in a residence hall. The certification is part of an overall plan for university preparedness, according to Roth.
As part of the certification process, Kelly George, director of the local branch of the Red Cross, performed a walk-through of the facility and inspected the required elements for certification.
The Ramsey Student Center has not yet been used as a disaster shelter.
Roth says that the university’s disaster-preparedness efforts have not been limited to the certification of an on-campus Red Cross shelter.
Plans are nearly complete for an accompanying pet shelter. Organized through the humane society, the shelter would be able to care for pets accompanying people at the disaster shelter. Volunteers will be students at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
