Basketball player protests
Toni Smith, a member of the Manhattanville College women’s basketball team, is using the basketball court to protest the threat of war with Iraq by turning away from the American flag while the national anthem is being played. School administrators have supported her right to express her political views, and some of her teammates have shown their support by standing beside her with their hands at their sides while the national anthem is being played. Others have argued that a sports event is not an appropriate arena for political expression.

Questioning race-specific programs
The American Civil Rights Institute and the Center for Equal Opportunity have undertaken a campaign to force public and private colleges to cease offering programs that exclude students on the basis of race. Several public and private colleges have received letters accusing them of being in violation of federal civil rights laws. The institutions were given a deadline to comply, by opening up the programs in question to persons of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, or the groups will file a formal complaint.
