To pay homage to historically black colleges and universities for the educational experiences he and others received, artist Joseph Norman and several of his patrons organized and facilitated the Amazing Grace Project, which gave 10 series/portfolios of lithographic prints to the permanent collections at the art galleries of several historically black colleges and universities.
The project also included education materials, brochures, posters and the exhibition catalog Amazing Grace: The Lithographs of Joseph Norman, which was written by Pamela Taylor, UGA assistant professor of art education.
“Norman takes an intellectual and passionate approach to his art making,” Taylor says. “Viewers of his work like the students in his classes are challenged to both reflect and research while critically learning about history, theory and themselves. He credits much of this passion for learning to his own educational experiences.”
Taylor’s research for this book sparked an art education program through UGA’s College of Education University/Community Partnership with Gaines and Chase Street elementary schools.
For approximately eight weeks per semester, UGA art education students worked with all students at these schools, involving them in interdisciplinary units of instruction centered on studying and making works of art.
