Cornell to meter Internet use
Faculty, students and staff at Cornell University soon will be charged for their use of the Internet. In an effort to control the amount of bandwidth used, Cornell has created a pay by the drink billing system.
Departmental and administrative offices will be charged a monthly per-port fee as well as a monthly Internet-use fee. Students will be charged a combined port-and-infrastructure fee every month and an Internet-use fee will be added into room rates.
The fee allows downloading or serving two gigabytes of information at no charge. For every megabyte over, the employee, department or student will be charged a fraction of a cent to cover the expense.
Va. Tech bans extreme speakers
Virginia Techs governing board has voted to ban speakers with extreme views from speaking on campus.
Student groups must now seek the presidents approval if they want to invite speakers whose views are considered to show support for domestic violence or terrorism.
