Men’s basketball coach, two players suspended; team forgoes postseason

Head men’s basketball coach Jim Harrick Sr. has been suspended with pay, two players--Chris Daniels and Rashad Wright--were also suspended and the university withdrew from the SEC and NCAA men’s basketball tournaments as a result of the findings of a joint investigation with the NCAA into allegations of academic fraud and ethical misconduct in that program.
These actions, announced at a March 10 press conference, followed closely the suspension of assistant coach Jim Harrick Jr. and a letter of reprimand issued to Paul Schempp, department head in physical education and sports studies, for not following procedure in assigning Harrick Jr. to teach a course in coaching basketball.
That course is at the center of the investigation, and Vince Dooley, director of athletics, said that the suspensions issued to the players resulted from their registering for but not attending the class.
Former player Tony Cole made allegations about that class as well as financial improprieties in an interview on ESPN Feb. 27. The university immediately began an investigation, inviting both the NCAA and the SEC to participate.
“The academic integrity of the University of Georgia and the value of the UGA degree are of paramount importance,” said UGA President Michael F. Adams. “We have investigated these allegations vigorously, and that investigation continues. We will continue to take appropriate action as we make findings and we will improve our policies and procedures as necessary.”
