Cell phones instead of land lines
Students who move into Marshall Universitys four new residence halls will receive a cell phone instead of the traditional room phone. Marshall is one of a handful of institutions handing out cell phones to students instead of land lines. At the end of the school year students will be required to return the cell phone to the university. For $30 a month, students will have unlimited local and long-distance minutes, but will be charged extra if they want voice mail.
Bachelor degree completion rate
A survey by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles found that the number of college students earning their bachelors degree in four years is declining. Students at private universities had a much higher rate, at 67.1 percent, of completing the bachelors degree in four years. The comparable figure was 28.1 percent at public universities.
The study also determined a correlation between degree-completion and the sex and race of a student. For example, Asian-American students four-year completion rate was highest, at 38.8 percent.
