What may prove to be some of the most historically significant speeches of the 21st century were delivered in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, as Americas leaders came to terms with issues of terror, war, immigration, the economy and other concerns.
Representative American Speeches 2001-2002--co-edited by Calvin Logue, UGA professor emeritus of speech communication--compiles a selection of key addresses that capture this time, including those of such central figures as President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Attorney General John Ashcroft, and others.
A special section entitled Responses to Sept. 11 features New York Gov. George Patakis Sept. 13 speech to the Joint Session of the New York State Legislature, President Bushs Sept. 20 address to a joint session of Congress and the American people, Rudolph Giulianis Oct. 1 speech to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Terrorism, and First Lady Laura Bushs radio address on Taliban oppression of women and children.
Subsequent sections of the book feature speeches on character and heroism, immigration, labor and the economy, food safety, and stem cell research and cloning. |
