Peabody Award winners

Telling tales: 31 programs receive Peabody for excellence in broadcasting

Probing investigative reporting, compelling drama and powerful documentaries mark the 62nd annual Peabody Awards, given to programs produced in 2002 and announced at the beginning of April. The Peabody board selected 31 programs for recognition based on the Peabody’s only criterion: excellence.



Richard Russell Foundation funds new professorship in agriculture

Though perhaps best known for his expertise in military and defense matters and budgetary issues, Georgia’s late U.S. Sen. Richard B. Russell had an abiding interest in agriculture and was instrumental in passing laws to benefit the nation’s farmers.
The Richard B. Russell Foundation in Atlanta and UGA are commemorating Russell’s support for agriculture by creating a professorship in his name in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.



Work from Studio 101

Work from Studio 101, on display in the visual arts building, features the work of Robert Stackhouse and marks the conclusion of the artist’s residency as the Lamar Dodd Professor. It includes work in collaboration with Carol Mickett for the Georgia Review. There will be an opening reception on April 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Three faculty receive university’s Creative Research Awards

The university honored outstanding faculty and graduate students April 2 at its 24th annual research awards banquet sponsored by the non-profit UGA Research Foundation.
Three Creative Research Awards--the Albert Christ-Janer Award for the arts and humanities, the Lamar Dodd Award for the sciences and the William A. Owens Award for the social and behavioral sciences--were given for outstanding scholarly or creative activities that have gained national and international recognition.



State’s business schools sweep GM competition

M.B.A. students from Emory University and UGA finished first and second in the annual GM/Terry Market Research Project Competition March 22, outdueling teams from other top business schools, including Harvard University, Northwestern University, Columbia University and the University of California at Berkeley.
M.B.A. candidates Ian Crystal, Debbie Hannah, Paige Kahn and Jason Sorvillo of Emory’s Goizueta Business School took the GM/Terry trophy and a $10,000 first prize for presenting the best solution to a customer relationship management case posed by contest co-sponsor General Motors.



Five undergraduates receive mid-term Foundation Fellowships

Five students have been awarded mid-term Foundation Fellowships, UGA’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship. Their fellowships will cover the final two years of academic study, including the full estimated cost of attending UGA as well as international travel-study grants, academic research and conference grants, and various academic enrichment opportunities.
