Discussing war on campus
Faculty at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, Calif., have voiced opposition to a vice presidents message requesting that discussions of the war in Iraq be limited to classes where the subject is deemed directly relevant, such as cultural anthropology or political science. The vice president for academic instruction, who sent the message, says he was responding to student complaints. Several faculty members have argued that such a suggestion infringes on academic freedom and that the war in Iraq is a suitable topic for any classroom debate.
Kansas senate bans its universities from buying obscene material
The state senate in Kansas has approved a measure that prohibits public universities from using state funds to buy obscene materials for undergraduate classes. University of Kansas officials believe the measure is narrowly aimed at a popular undergraduate course on human sexuality, which uses explicit materials such as videotapes that are considered obscene under Kansas law. The course has been taught for more than 20 years. The University of Kansas could lose $3.1 million in state funds.
