UGA tops in international education

In response to last week’s Forum on International Education in Columns, please note that:

• UGA currently ranks number 12 nationally among research universities in the number of students who study abroad. Last year we ranked 16th.

• UGA ranks in the top 5 in the number of students who travel on short-term study abroad.

• The university hosts more than 2,000 international students, scholars and visitors annually--all of whose immigration status is assured by the Office of International Education.

• Over the past five years, OIE staff have helped faculty start 65 new study-abroad programs.

• OIE disburses $100,000 per year to faculty who are starting new study-abroad programs--the single largest line item in the office’s budget.

• UGA was among the first universities in the country to become compliant with all aspects of the new Department of Homeland Security’s mandatory SEVIS program.

• Ours is the only public research university with three overseas residential sites--Oxford, England; Cortona, Italy; and San Luis, Costa Rica--campuses that are funded by non-state funds.

• OIE has been working with the new School for Public and International Affairs on a proposal for a globalization requirement in the UGA curriculum.

• UGA’s Study Abroad Fair is the largest in the Southeast. This year, 95 study-abroad exhibitors met with nearly 2,000 UGA students.

• With support from OIE, UGA is aggressively raising funds for scholarships for study abroad.

• This year, OIE sponsored 40 outreach programs to classes and campus groups.

• OIE’s Study Abroad Risk Management Program--designed to assure student safety--is widely viewed as the best and most comprehensive risk management program in the country.
