the state, the Vinson Institute of Government has announced the launch of its annual Excellence in Public Service Awards program.
The program--a public-private partnership between the Vinson Institute, Georgia Trend magazine, the Georgia Municipal Association, the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia and Georgia Public Broadcasting--will honor excellence and innovation in Georgias public sector as a means of enhancing the perception of public service careers for both future prospects and current public-sector professionals.
As part of the institutes mission to support good government, and to help address the issue of public service as a career, we believe that it is useful to develop a program that highlights public service excellence and formally recognizes those individuals who serve Georgias communities and citizens with distinction, says Jim Ledbetter, director of the institute. After all, a viable democracy depends on active and engaged citizens and leaders, committed to improving their communities and improving the lives of their citizens. We hope that these awards will help foster a continued commitment to public service in our current workforce, as well as encouraging people to consider dedicating their careers to public service.
We are pleased to be a part of this program to recognize outstanding public service, says Neely Young, editor and publisher of Georgia Trend. Through our coverage of Georgia business and government, we have learned that there are a lot of dedicated public servants who dont always get the recognition they deserve. Every one of them has a good story that we can share with our readers, and we look forward to doing that.
The Excellence in Public Service Awards program will bestow a limited number of awards to state, regional, county and city officials and professionals each year. The program is designed with three primary purposes in mind:
to publicly honor outstanding state and local elected, appointed or career public-sector service professionals,
to foster a culture of recognized excellence in Georgias professional public service, drawing attention to exemplary service and distinguished achievements, and
to help raise the profile of state and local public service as a career pursuit, while enhancing the prospects of future service of potential and already serving public-sector professionals.
Nominations are encouraged from across the state and will be accepted from organizations and individuals through a formal application process. Complete nomination applications are due to the Vinson Institute of Government no later than June 16, 2003. The awards will be formally announced at a public ceremony in November. |
