Becoming a Nation: Americana from the Diplomatic Reception Rooms, U.S. Department of State, opens at the Georgia

| Fitz Hugh Lanes View of Boston Harbor |
Museum of Art July 5 and will run through Aug. 31.
The exhibition includes more than 160 objects from one of the nations least-known cultural treasures, the period settings of the diplomatic reception rooms at the State Department. The collection was begun in the 1950s to show the elegance of the young democratic republic. Six galleries in the museum will present a visual history of the United States, using maps, portraits, paintings and furniture. The objects represent the finest craftsmanship and artistic talent of the golden age of American decorative and fine arts, from approximately 1750 to 1825.
Several paintings are included: View of Boston Harbor by Fitz Hugh Lane (reproduced at left), Thomas Jeffersons portrait attributed to Charles Wilson Peale, and a portrait of John Quincy Adams painted while he was serving as U.S. minister to Great Britain.
