UGAs 2003-2004 academic year officially begins Aug. 17 with the Opening Convocation, which introduces new students to life at UGA.
The convocation, at 4 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum, will be just hours before the start of fall semester classes on Aug. 18. The event has been staged annually since 1999 as a way to welcome new students and faculty to the university and to formally get the new year under way.
This is an occasion where we try to impress on new students what it means to be a part of a community of learning in which knowledge and scholarship are highly valued, says Arnett Mace, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. But its also a time for all members of this community--students, faculty and staff--to celebrate the excitement and the promise of a new academic year.
President Michael F. Adams will preside and make brief remarks about opportunities that await new students and faculty in the new year.
A video will be shown with greetings from Athens-Clarke County Mayor Heidi Davison; Latham Saddler, president of the Student Government Association; George Felis, president of the Graduate Student Association; Scott Weinberg, chair of the University Council Executive Committee; Paul Totis, president of the Staff Council; and Dink NeSmith, incoming president of the UGA Alumni Association.
The event will end with the Derby Band, an ensemble of the Georgia Redcoat Band, playing Georgia fight songs and leading the crowd to a reception outside the coliseum, where cheerleaders and Hairy Dawg will help newcomers get in the spirit for football.
