Front and (4-H) Center
The 4-H Center on Jekyll Island was rededicated Aug. 7 after completion of a $1.5 million renovation project, which included removing the existing curtain wall so campers will be able to enjoy the ocean view.
Operated by UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the center hosts more than 10,000 Georgia students each year. It is one of six 4-H centers located across the state.
UGA President Michael F. Adams and Gale Buchanan, dean of agricultural and environmental sciences, were among the speakers at the rededication ceremony.


Money in the bank: Buying power of U.S. minority households continues to grow at a rate faster than that of white households

The amount of disposable income controlled by minority households continues to grow faster than that of white households, according to a report released last week by the Selig Center for Economic Growth in the Terry College of Business.
The report shows substantial gains in after-tax income among African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Native Americans, thanks to fundamentally strong national and regional economies that have benefited most U.S. consumers since 1990.



Twenty-eight undergraduates work on research projects with faculty mentors

Twenty-eight UGA students worked on research projects with faculty mentors this year through a summer fellowship program funded by the provost’s office and UGA’s Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute.



Another round of budget cuts begins for state government

On Aug. 4, the state Office of Planning and Budget instructed all state agencies “to identify 2.5 percent of their FY2004 appropriation for probable reduction.” Fiscal year 2004 is the current fiscal year, and the University System is one of the many state agencies affected.



Forty freshmen enter with major scholarship awards

Forty academically outstanding students will enter the university this fall as the recipients of major scholarships awarded by the institution. The students were selected from a record number of applicants for these highly competitive awards.


University names Griffin Doyle as its first director of federal relations

J. Griffin Doyle
J. Griffin Doyle, associate vice president for economic and community development at UGA, will become the university’s first director of federal relations following approval by the University System Board of Regents.
The university has created the position to serve as a liaison with federal legislators and government agencies and to help the university obtain more federal funding.



A century of pharmacy

A granite marker commemorating the founding of the UGA College of Pharmacy 100 years ago will be placed on the sidewalk in front of the Robert C. Wilson Pharmacy Building during ceremonies on Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m. The marker, bearing the college’s centennial logo, was crafted by Kenneth Williams of the Lamar Dodd School of Art using the ancient hammer and chisel method.
