Forty academically outstanding students will enter the university this fall as the recipients of major scholarships awarded by the institution. The students were selected from a record number of applicants for these highly competitive awards.
Twenty-one students were awarded Foundation Fellowships, which provide an annual stipend of $8,000 for in-state students (all of whom qualify for the HOPE Scholarship) and $12,000 for out-of-state students, along with a tuition waiver. Foundation Fellows also receive travel-study and academic conference and research grants, as well as a variety of other academic enrichment opportunities. The Foundation Fellows program was established in 1972 by the trustees of the UGA Foundation to create an enhanced educational experience for undergraduate students with stellar academic credentials.
Another 19 students were awarded Ramsey Honors Scholarships, which include a $4,000 stipend for in-state students (plus the HOPE Scholarship) and a $6,500 stipend for out-of-state students, along with a tuition waiver. Ramsey Scholars also receive a $2,000 travel-study grant. The awards are named for UGAs most generous individual benefactor, the late Bernard Ramsey.
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions helped identify qualified students and then reviewed more than 800 applications. The new Foundation Fellows have an average SAT of 1511 and an average GPA of 4.09 on a 4.0 scale, having earned extra credit for advanced courses. The Ramsey Honors Scholars have an average SAT of 1505 and average GPA of 3.99.
The scholarship recipients are enrolled in UGAs Honors Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country. This years first-year Honors class of more than 500 students will be the largest and most highly qualified in UGAs history, with an average SAT of 1410 and average weighted GPA of 4.0.
We are tremendously pleased with the high caliber of this group of incoming first-year students, says Jere Morehead, associate provost and director of the Honors and Foundation Fellows programs. Being able to offer the Foundation Fellowship and Ramsey Honors Scholarships enables us to keep some of Georgias top students in-state. It also raises UGAs national profile, as we increasingly draw applicants from around the country. |
