External funding marks third year of double-digit growth
For the third consecutive year, total external funding for research, instruction, and public service and outreach at the university has experienced double digit increases, says Gordhan L. Patel, vice president for research and associate provost.
This is indeed good news for the University of Georgia and for the state of Georgia as a whole, says President Michael F. Adams. The research that is conducted at UGA is an important factor in the economic strength of this state. Another record year in research funding caps off our best academic year ever and sets the stage for another very strong year at UGA.

Good taste: Food scientists upgrade soldiers ready-to-eat scrambled eggs
U.S. troops deployed in Iraq this year had MREs--Meals Ready to Eat--that were vastly improved over those available during the 1991 Gulf War. But scrambled eggs werent part of the ready-to-eat packages. The army stopped buying scrambled-egg MREs five years ago because they tasted so bad, says Romeo Toledo, a UGA food scientist whos trying to change that.
Eggs have been a major problem for the military, says Toledo, whose research team is working with a U.S. Army grant to bring ready-to-eat eggs back into military rations. |

Blaster gets the hook: Security experts close network traffic ports to slow progression of computer worm
As computer users the world over began dealing with the Blaster worm earlier this month, the security experts in UGAs Office of Information Security and Network Operations decided to close the particular network traffic ports the worm was using to spread from one device to the next.
We were especially worried because so many students and professors would be coming back to campus, with their laptops and PDAs, says Stan Gatewood, chief information security officer at the university. And at the same time all the computers in the new Student Learning Center would be going on line. We proposed to the senior administration at UGA that we could limit the risk by closing those ports.
