Student sentenced for fake theft
A former graduate student at Michigan State University was sentenced to 10 months in prison for faking the theft of his own research materials.
Authorities say the student, who was supposed to be working on a vaccine to prevent a pneumonia-like disease in pigs, had apparently not done any research for several years. To cover up this lack of work, he reported that his notebooks, computer disks and two vials of disease-causing bacteria had been stolen.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the student to repay $70,000 in federal research grant funds he had spent.
Ex-Rep. will teach at Cornell
Former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D.Ga.) has been named a visiting professor at Cornell University.
A five-term congresswoman who was defeated last year in the Democratic primary, McKinney will begin a three-year stint as an occasional lecturer. Under her agreement with Cornell, McKinney will spend at least two weeks each semester at the university, in Ithaca, N.Y., beginning this fall.
