Research fraud charged at NKU
The Northern Kentucky University Board of Regents fired an economics professor and accepted the resignation of two finance professors and the retirement of another economics professor late last month.
The university had charged all four with involvement in a research-fraud scandal, which had been under investigation for 18 months. They were accused of plagiarizing the work of others, fabricating data in scholarly papers, duplicating large chunks of their own work in numerous papers and listing as authors faculty at NKU who did not contribute to the research.
Tuition rises at public institutions
Many states have raised the price of attending public colleges for the 2003-04 academic year. Across the nation double-digit percentage tuition increases were not uncommon. The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges reported that more than 25 state college or university systems had increased tuition by between 10 percent and 20 percent, four by 25 percent or more and another four by 30 percent or more. Northern Arizona University topped the list with the highest increase over 2002-03 at 39.2 percent.
