U. of N. Texas charging to fix virus
The University of North Texas will now charge students $30 to tidy up their personal computers if they become infected with the blaster worm or its rapidly spreading imitations. The blaster worms, which enter through unprotected ports, target only Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines but can impede network traffic. The $30 clean-up fee will help the university recover some of the repair costs since, given the number of machines needing repairs, the price could reach $18,000.
Colleges combat music pirating
A number of colleges, online music services and the Recording Industry Association of America are collaborating to allow students to download music legally. Together they are testing a campus-wide program in which colleges would pay the companies to let students download music without the anxiety of an impending lawsuit. Pennsylvania State University and the University of Rochester are expected to participate in the pilot program. If the pilot is successful, colleges might consider making it permanent. Some college officials have considered including in tuition or student fees a subscription to a music service.
