Center for Continuing Education. Pending approval from the board of regents, Leiter will begin work on Oct. 15.
Leiter brings nearly four decades of experience in educational leadership, business and facilities management, and human resources development to the directors position at the Georgia Center. He currently serves as dean of university outreach and continuing education at the University of Tennessee, where he oversees the University Conference Center, professional and personal development programs, independent study, extended campus programs, special programs and the English Language Institute. Before arriving at the University of Tennessee, Leiter worked as dean of university outreach at Florida International University and as dean and professor in the division of continuing education at Mississippi State University.
As the Georgia Center moves through a period of change, it will require a strong leader who both understands the tradition of continuing education at UGA and can bring new ideas to the organization, says Art Dunning, vice president for public service and outreach. Dr. Leiter is recognized as an innovative administrator and scholar in the field of lifelong learning, and we look forward to having him take the lead at the Georgia Center.
Leiter has long been a leader in university continuing education. During 2001-2002, he served as president of the Association for Continuing Higher Education, an international association that represents more than 700 institutions of higher education.
It is truly an honor to have been selected as the new director of the Georgia Center, Leiter says. The center has a long and rich heritage and tradition, and I look forward to continuing to make that tradition even stronger.
