Awards nominations
The UGA Research Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2004 Creative Research Awards, the 2004 Creative Research Medals and 2004 Robert C. Anderson Memorial Awards. The deadline for all three awards is Nov. 4. Guidelines and forms are available at www.ovpr.uga.edu/forms/ugarf.html. Nominations should be forwarded to UGARF 609 Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center.
Reminder: UGARF Faculty Research Grant proposals are due Oct. 7, except proposals for grants in the humanities and arts, which are due Oct. 2.
Computer instruction courses
Business and Community Programs will offer a variety of computer instruction courses through December at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The classes are designed for adults who wish to expand their knowledge of computer-related topics.
Adobe Acrobat will be offered Oct. 2, Identity Theft: Protecting Your Good Name Oct. 7-9, Flash Action Scripting through Game Design Oct. 8-Nov. 12, and Computer Security Dec. 2-4.

Deadline for bulletin changes
The deadline for submitting changes for the spring 2004 online bulletin is Oct. 1. Deadlines also appear on the bulletin Web site at www.bulletin.uga.edu. Information received after the deadline will be held over and automatically included in the next version of the bulletin. Previous versions of the online bulletin are available for viewing on the Web site under Bulletin Archives.
The spring bulletin goes online Jan. 5, 2004.

Chicken genome symposium
A symposium entitled Chicken Genome Sequence: Impact and Applications is planned for Nov. 13 and 14 at the Omni Hotel at CNN Tower in Atlanta. The symposium is jointly organized by UGA and AviGenics, Inc.
Speakers will include scientists who have played critical roles in the sequencing of the chicken genome and development of EST libraries, as well as experts from poultry companies, USDA and other research institutions.

Osteoporosis-prevention research participants
Researchers in the department of foods and nutrition are conducting a study to investigate the effects of soy on bone mineral density. Postmenopausal women between the ages of 40 and 60 who have not been diagnosed with osteoporosis and are not taking estrogen or hormone replacement therapy are needed to participate. Benefits include free bone mineral density measurements, physical exams, blood work and vitamin and mineral supplements for two years. Modest compensation is provided ($175 total). First fall Writing in the Disciplines colloquy
The Franklin College Writing Intensive Program invites faculty from across UGA to the first Fall Writing in the Disciplines Colloquy on Oct. 9, 3:30-4:30 p.m., in 251 Student Learning Center.
Writing Intensive faculty Patti Gowaty (ecology), Bob Matthews (entomology), Naomi Norman (classics) and Dorothea Link (music) will present ideas and experiences on low stakes and high stakes writing assignments in their disciplines.
A second WIP Writing in the Disciplines Colloquy on Nov. 20 (also scheduled for 3:30-4:30 p.m. in 251 Student Learning Center) will feature guidelines and discussion for proposing a writing intensive course for academic year 2004-05.
The Writing Intensive Program involves 45 courses in 14 disciplines at UGA. The program encourages writing in the disciplines, supports faculty who make writing central to academic inquiry and learning in their courses, and trains graduate assistants in assigning and responding to student writing.
