UGACard office updates ID cards

The UGACard office is updating identification cards issued prior to June 9, 2003, to guard against identity theft.
UGA employees and students need a UGACard to check out books from the library,
to use the Ramsey Center, to buy tickets for university events, to ride city buses and
to get flu shots at the University Health Center. (Photo by Janet Beckley)
Currently, those cards display the user’s Social Security number. If lost or stolen, the Social Security number could easily be accessed, according to Jerry Anthony in the student activities business office. To reduce the likelihood of identity theft, the UGACard Office will remove the Social Security number from its database and replace it with a 16-digit campus ID number.
All faculty, staff, students, retired faculty and staff, and dependents in Athens with the old cards are encouraged to update them by Jan. 2, 2004, to continue to take advantage of services that require such identification. Off-campus employees will have their cards converted at a later date.
Those who turn in their old cards when upgrading to the new card will be charged a fee of $3. Without the old card, the fee will be $15.
The student activities business office is using an alphabetical schedule for the updates. Faculty, staff and students whose last names begin with the letters A-K may update their identification cards through Nov. 1; those whose last names begin with the letters L-Z may update their identification cards Nov. 2 through Dec. 1. Make-up dates for the conversion process are Dec. 2 through 19.
The UGACard office is located in the student activities business office, room 320 of the Tate Student Center. Office hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. The office also will be open Saturday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 13, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The office will be closed Oct. 31 for fall break.
