Early-decision admissions challenge
Sen. Edward (D-Mass.) Kennedy is considering proposing legislation that would reduce federal support for colleges that employ early-decision policies, as part of Congress’s current work to renew the Higher Education Act. Early-decision plans require that students pledge to attend that particular college if accepted. Critics of the program argue that it unfairly pressures students to pick a college before they are ready to do so. Opponents of Kennedy’s position say that colleges would lose the ability to regulate themselves if they were forced to freeze early-admission options. Some studies have found it is statistically easier to gain admission to elite colleges under early decision than under regular admission.

Bedtime blues at SUNY Buffalo
Five students have been injured falling or jumping out of their bunk beds this semester at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Two of the students jumped down in a rush to answer telephones, one tripped getting out of bed and two don’t know what happened. Administrators at SUNY Buffalo are concerned, as they typically experience only one such incident a year. The university will spend about $40,000 to bolt guardrails onto 600 beds, and a special committee has been convened to study the problem.
