Student discovers software glitch
John Halderman, a Princeton graduate student, discovered a security flaw in software aimed at thwarting music piracy created by SunnComm Technologies. Halderman, a student studying computer science, says consumers can easily defeat the software on CDs. Bypassing the system is as simple as holding down the shift key for a few seconds after inserting a CD into a computer that runs Microsofts Windows operating system. Peter Jacobs, CEO of SunnComm, initially threatened to sue Halderman under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. He has since rescinded his initial threats.
NRC wants safety committee
A National Research Council panel has recommended that the National Institutes of Health be given increased power to oversee research financed by that agency, other federal agencies and private companies. The goal is for scientists and the federal government to establish safeguards that would prevent biological researchers from inadvertently providing information useful to would-be terrorists or rogue bioweapons inventors. The panels report calls for a series of filters to prevent scientists from engaging in potentially dangerous lines of research. The primary level of screening would take place within committees consisting of at least five members, two of whom come from outside the institution. They would screen research proposals for safety issues. If such issues did arise, a committee could reject a proposal or seek guidance from other committees.
