Alumnus analyzes black fraternalism

$49.50 (cloth)
$23.95 (paper)
Farleigh Dickinson University Press
Written by UGA alumnus Walter Kimbrough, Black Greek 101 is the first book to provide a complete analysis of the culture of historically black fraternities and sororities. Based on more than 10 years of research, Black Greek 101 presents a detailed history of black fraternalism as a whole.
The development of historically black fraternities and sororities is important in many ways to higher education. The organizations were formed not long after the first black students entered higher education, and the growth and success of these organizations paralleled advances made in providing education to black people as a whole. Many of the major advances by the organizations occurred in tandem with major historical events, including the increase of students after the GI Bill was enacted, the desegregation of Southern universities and the civil rights movement.
As a unique culture within the college environment, these organizations are fascinating examples of the ways students form groups with their own artifacts, rites, customs, stories and rituals that help them adapt to the larger college environment.
