Swarthmore closes student Web site
Swarthmore College temporarily shut down two students network connections after the students published online internal company memos from Diebold Inc., a producer of electronic-voting machines. The students said the memos reveal that people can tamper with Diebolds vote-counting database and change votes, and that distributing the documents could lead to fairer elections. A Diebold spokesman said the materials the students had been distributing on the Internet were stolen, and the company considered their posting to be copyright infringement. After the students removed the materials, their Internet connection was immediately restored.
UFL to pay for waste monitoring
The University of Florida has agreed to create a plan for assessing the chemical waste dumped at landfills it used more than 30 years ago. State officials who have been investigating the unlined landfills, which were used by the university in the late 1960s, have discovered unacceptable levels of benzene, arsenic and radium in the five-acre area.
The university has been given 60 days to develop an assessment plan, then seven months to carry it out, says a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The university must also pay the department $110,000 for its monitoring of toxic waste at the two landfills. When the cleanup begins, the university will be responsible for all costs.
