| Columns::November 17, 2003 Around academe Morehouse soccer team disbanded Following an investigation by the National Collegiate Athletic Association into charges of major rule infractions, Morehouse College’s soccer team has been punished with the so-called “death penalty” for violations of NCAA rules. The team has been disbanded and will not be allowed to re-form until after the 2005-06 academic year. According to the report, two professional players from Nigeria were allowed to play on the team, even before they had enrolled in the school. Certification rules for athletes were also not followed. The investigation has been under way for three years. Voters split on higher-ed financing In November election results, Maine voters approved a measure for $19 million in higher education bonds. Most of the approved bonds--$12 million worth--will support improvements and an enrollment increase for the Maine Community College System. The remaining funds will provide equipment and repairs for the University of Maine System and the Maine Maritime Academy. In Ohio, however, voters rejected a proposal that would have allowed state colleges to issue bonds for technology research and development.
