Porterfield, former business executive, is named new dean of forest resources

Richard L. Porterfield, a former forestry professor who for 21 years held executive positions with Champion International paper company, has been chosen dean of the Warnell School of Forest Resources.
Porterfield was chosen from among four finalists identified in a national search led by Keith Prasse, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. His appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2004, pending approval by the University System Board of Regents. He will succeed James Sweeney, who has been interim dean since October of 2002.



Juilliard String Quartet

‘Quintessential American quartet’ set to perform at Hodgson Hall

The Performing Arts Center will present a concert by the Juilliard String Quartet Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. in Hodgson Hall.
For more than 50 years, the Juilliard String Quartet has been recognized as a leader in its field, renowned internationally for performances that are characterized by clarity of structure, beauty of sound and unanimity of purpose.



Olympic storyteller comes to campus for ‘Conversation’

Bud Greenspan
Bud Greenspan will show a selection of his award-winning sports documentaries and discuss his work on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Tate Center Theater. Following his presentation, Greenspan will talk about his career with Peabody Director Horace Newcomb and members of the audience. The event, part of a continuing series of Center for Humanities and Arts-Peabody Conversations, is free and open to the public.
Greenspan won a Personal Peabody Award in 1996 for a lifetime of outstanding work; he was cited by the Peabody Board for “an exceptional gift for personal storytelling, a matchless eye for camera angle and location, and above all, a complete and total commitment to truth.”



UGA will hold its first-ever Government Career Expo’

The Career Center will hold its first-ever Government Career Expo on Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tate Student Center. The expo is designed to raise students’ awareness of the wide spectrum of career opportunities available at all government levels. It is sponsored by the Career Center in partnership with UGA’s School of Public and International Affairs, the Vinson Institute of Government, the Georgia Municipal Association and the Georgia Merit System.
