Student engagement varies
The latest National Survey of Student Engagement found that, nationwide, business students report the least contact with faculty members while chemistry students boast the most student-faculty interaction. This marked the fourth year for the National Survey of Student Engagement; it reported the responses of 145,000 freshmen and seniors at 437 four-year colleges in the spring of 2003. Engagement was measured by how involved students were in the material they studied and in the learning process itself.
Ohio State winner: IBM
In an attempt to cut operating costs, Ohio State University has negotiated a deal that will confine new computer purchases within the university system to IBM products. The university normally spends $25 million a year on computer equipment. IBM will provide desktop computers, notebooks and servers with a 35 percent discount; IBMs usual discount for higher education customers is 10 percent. Moreover, the higher discount will apply to all buyers at Ohio State, regardless of number of machines ordered.
