Weather closing plan reminder
The university community is reminded of procedures for determining operations during periods of inclement winter weather.
By policy, the university makes one of three announcements: UGA is open and operating on a regular schedule; UGA is closed; or UGA will delay opening until a specific time.
The primary means to access such announcements include the distribution of an all-campus e-mail and the posting of an announcement to the UGA home page (www.uga.edu) and on the UGA Today news page (www.uga.edu/news).
Up-to-date information is provided to Athens radio stations as follows:
on the AM dial: 960 and 1340; and
on the FM dial: 88.9, 90.5, 91.7, 97.9, 102.1, 103.7 and 106.1. Information is posted on University Cable Channel 15, which also is carried on channel 15 of the Charter cable system serving Clarke and Oconee counties.
Winter weather in this area generally develops overnight. Every attempt is made to post announcements and notify media by 6:30 a.m. Athens radio stations are used primarily because they give priority to UGA announcements where Atlanta stations cannot. Atlanta TV and radio stations that have requested to receive UGA weather announcements also are notified.
If the weather develops during the school/work day, the same procedures above are used, as well as notice being made to the office of each vice president and dean concerning a mid-day closing, for further distribution through their departments.
When weather conditions are such that closings occur two or more days in succession, the procedure is followed each day, with an announcement being made each morning by 6:30 a.m. An evening announcement will not usually be made for the
next day except in the most extreme weather circumstances.
Next phase of Brooks Mall begins
The next phase of the Brooks Mall master plan implementation has begun and will continue through August.
This phase includes work along D.W. Brooks Drive and West Green Street, in the vicinity of Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center, Hardman Hall, the College of Pharmacy, the dance and marine programs buildings and Snelling Hall.
The major infrastructure work of this phase will provide support to new campus facilities by upgrading or increasing the capacity of utility distribution systems and includes steam and condensation lines, water lines and communication lines. Once the utilities work is completed the surface hardscape and landscape work will be put in place.
Physical plant administrators ask that caution be used when driving or walking in, around or near this area. Construction will cause parking and traffic disruptions at various times during this work.
Anyone with questions or those who need assistance during construction should call 542-7494 or 542-7552.
Two education students win scholarships
Two UGA College of Education graduate students have received scholarships for the 2003-04 academic year from Kappa Delta Pi, an international education honor society.
Amy Lockwood, a masters student in social science education from Lawrenceville, was one of five graduate students across the nation to be awarded KDPs Counselors Scholarship.
Thomas Van Soelen, a doctoral student in elementary education, was awarded KDPs Henry Hill Laureate Scholarship. The scholarship is one of seven the KDP Educational Foundation awards annually for doctoral students in each of seven major areas of study. The Henry Hill scholarship is for those majoring in the field of educational administration and supervision (higher education, supervision and leadership).
