Merrily Dunn
, an assistant professor in counseling and human development services and coordinator of the education college’s student affairs administration master’s program, received the Melvene Draheim Hardee Award at the Southern Association for College Student Affairs conference. The award is given annually for outstanding contributions to student affairs through research and scholarship. Tom Jackson
Tom Jackson
Tom Jackson, associate vice president for public affairs, received the Georgia Education Advancement Council’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding achievement in public relations.

GEAC is an organization of people who work in educational advancement at Georgia’s public and private colleges and universities. The council presents annual awards for achievement in public relations, communications, fund raising and alumni relations.

Jackson served on the GEAC board of directors for the past eight years and was treasurer for the past six years. He is also a member and past chair of the University System of Georgia Public Relations Advisory Council.

Stacey Neuharth-Pritchett, an associate professor of elementary education, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Board of Examiners for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

NCATE is a national accrediting body for schools, colleges and departments of education authorized by the U.S. Department of Education. It is a coalition of 33 national education organizations, representing teachers, teacher educators, subject matter specialists and policy makers.

NCATE determines which schools, colleges and departments of education meet rigorous national standards in preparing teachers and other school specialists for the classroom. Accreditation assures that the school underwent rigorous external review by professionals, that performance of teacher candidates in the program are thoroughly assessed before being recommended for certification, and that programs meet standards set by the teaching profession at large.

Members of the NCATE Board of Examiners perform the most essential component of the NCATE process—the volunteer peer review of the professional education unit at a college or university. All on-site visits to schools of education are conducted by BOE teams of three to six educators, policy makers and education specialists.

George Strobel, associate professor of physics and astronomy, received a National Ignition Facility Programs Award from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He was recognized for his beryllium ignition target designs with a graded copper dopant. The NIF is a U.S. government effort to create controlled nuclear fusion in small ping-pong ball shaped targets. The targets are compressed simultaneously on all sides by high intensity lasers to such a small volume and high density that energy-producing nuclear fusion reactions spontaneously begin.
