Jack Fincham |
Jack E. Fincham, former dean and professor of pharmacy practice
at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and a former member
of the UGA pharmacy faculty, will be returning to the college as
the Albert W. Jowdy Professor of Pharmacy Care on April 1.
Established in honor of the late Professor Emeritus Albert W. Jowdy,
the professorship promotes excellence in pharmacy care through instruction
and scholarship.
Jowdy was especially recognized for his keen interest in students,
his outstanding teaching and his superb mentorship. His achievements,
both as a student advocate and researcher in pharmacy care administration,
are nationally known. The Jowdy Professorship recognizes a faculty
member who has demonstrated a genuine interest in students, has
an outstanding teaching record with a commitment to stimulate student
curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, and has a distinguished
scholarship or service record in pharmacy care.
Fincham has held academic, research and administrative positions
at several schools and colleges of pharmacy. He began his academic
career as a faculty member in UGA’s department of pharmacy
care administration in 1983. In 1986 he joined the faculty at the
University of Mississippi, and in 1994 moved to KU, where he was
also a member of the Graduate School faculty and on the board of
directors of the KU Center for Research.
Fincham has researched varying topics pertaining to the outcomes
of the drug use process, including patient compliance, pharmacoepidemiology,
documentation of professional services, drug use in the elderly,
health outcomes of tobacco use, and smoking cessation therapies.
Fincham has authored more than 160 refereed and professional manuscripts
published in more than 50 journals. He has made more than 200 professional
and research presentations to allied health, dental, medical, information
technology, nursing, pharmacy, and public health professional groups
from Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the
United States.
Fincham has served as the national pharmacy spokesperson for the
American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout and the Coalition
for World No Tobacco Day. He is an active member of numerous pharmacy,
public health and academic associations. He recently began service
as a member of the Nonprescription Drug Advisory Committee of the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Fincham is a 1975 graduate of the University of Nebraska College
of Pharmacy. He was a Kellogg Pharmaceutical Clinical Scientist
Fellow at the University of Minnesota where he obtained his Ph.D.
in Social and Administrative Pharmacy in 1983.
