The Carl Maddox Sport Management Award is given annually by the academy to an individual for contribution to the growth and development of the sports enterprise through effective management practices. The award is named in honor of Maddox, the former director of athletics at Louisiana State and Mississippi State.

Michael Rupured, a financial management specialist with the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, is a 2003 Distinguished Fellow of the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education.

Rupured has been an active and contributing member of AFCPE for more than a decade, including serving as president of the organization in 2000. He also served as secretary, vice president, board member and conference program chair.

P. Toby Graham, director of the Digital Library of Georgia, received the 2004 Alabama Author Award for Non-fiction for A Right to Read: Segregation and Civil Rights in Alabama’s Public Libraries 1900-1965, the first book to examine public library segregation of libraries in the South.

The Alabama Library Association has presented awards since 1958 to outstanding Alabama authors to honor their achievements and to promote interest in their books. Graham joins the ranks of such Alabama authors as Harper Lee, William Bradford Huie, Robert Inman, Howell Raines, Wayne Flynt and Gail Godwin. The award will be presented at the association’s conference in April.

Brian VanGorder, defensive coordinator for the football team, received the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant football coach from the Downtown Rotary Club of Little Rock.

The Broyles Award is named after longtime Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles, who became known for producing top assistant coaches during his coaching career with the Razorbacks.

VanGorder received a 100-pound cast bronze statue worth $5,000 and an additional $2,500.

Sista, Speak!, a book by associate professor of English Sonja Lanehart, received an honorable mention in the 2003 Myers Outstanding Book Award competition sponsored by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights in North America.

The selection committee noted their appreciation for the book’s “creative craftsmanship in analysis of the dynamics of language oppression and their feeling that it will help many form better ways of interacting as members of complex and diverse societies.”
