Wisconsin med schools get millions
The University of Wisconsin Medical School and the Medical College of Wisconsin will split an endowment of $600 million made available when Blue Cross/Blue Shield United of Wisconsin became a for-profit company in 2000. The money will be managed by the Wisconsin United for Health Foundation, which has doled out the first $30 million to each school for immediate use. Each college had to present a five-year spending plan, and the money will cover a wide range of issues, including underserved populations, genetic and cancer research, and preventive medicine.

Bars sued for fixing prices
Two University of Wisconsin students have brought an anti-trust lawsuit against 24 Madison bars that, according to the lawsuit, all agreed to end Friday and Saturday night drink specials. The bars’ owners said they agreed to ban drink specials under the influence of the university’s chancellor and the PACE Project, which aims to cut back on binge drinking. If the allegations are proven true, the bars could be in violation of federal laws that prohibit business competitors from setting pricing as a group.
