Women make gains in athletic jobs
An annual survey has found that while the number of women’s athletic teams peaked a couple of years ago, women are still making progress in coaching and administrative jobs within women’s athletic departments across the country. When the NCAA took over women’s programs in the early 1980s, the number of women in women’s-athletic coaching and administrative jobs plummeted, but the numbers have been steadily rising since. Women have taken about half the new coaching positions since 2002, and there are now 187 women who are directors for women’s athletic programs.

Internet surveillance cost protested
School and library groups from 13 institutions are protesting a proposal to the FCC that would allow federal investigators to tap into Internet-based voice communications over campus networks. Compliance, say the colleges, will cost each institution millions as they reconfigure their networks to allow for the surveillance, and the schools would only be allowed about 15 months to get the work done. Group members also say that such changes could infringe upon student, faculty and staff privacy.
