Plant sale
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia's annual spring plant sale is April 18 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year's sale includes annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, herbs, ferns, ornamental grasses and vegetables--including many hard-to-find and native species. Specialty booths with garden-related art, goods and services also will be available. Horticulture staff and Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to help select plants, give tips on cultivation and care and answer questions. Sale proceeds benefit garden programs and projects. Supervisor symposium
A supervisor symposium coordinated by the training and development department will be held April 14 and 15 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The symposium features 13 short programs designed for UGA supervisory faculty and staff. Registration is required. For more information, call 542-7062.


Fulbright competition
Competition for 1999-2000 Fulbright scholar awards has begun. Opportunities for lecturing or advanced research in nearly 130 countries are available to college and university faculty and professionals outside academe.

The deadline for lecturing or research grant applications is Aug. 1. Other deadlines are: distinguished Fulbright Chairs in Western Europe and Canada (May 1) and Ful-bright seminars for international education and academic administrators (Nov. 1).

Online education
The Office of Instructional Support and Development will host "Ongoing Discussions about Online Education--Interaction, Collaboration and Ownership" April 7 from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in room 275 of the journalism building. Faculty Center anniversary
The university community is invited to the 10th anniversary celebration of the Faculty Center April 10 from noon to 1 p.m. in the dining hall in Memorial Hall. The celebration will include refreshments and music.


Promotion, tenure forum
Vice President for Academic Affairs William F. Prokasy will conduct a forum on the promotion and tenure process for all interested faculty on April 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the law school auditorium. The format of the forum will be a question-and- answer session.


Anxiety screening
Information about stress, worry, anxiety, lack of concentration and other problems will be available on National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day on April 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in room 137 of the Tate Student Center.


Native American culture
The Native American Cultural Society will meet on April 13 at 7 p.m. at Native America, 195 East Clayton Street.

A non-profit, community oriented organization, NACS is dedicated to promoting the understanding, acceptance and practice of Native American culture through education and social interaction. Upcoming events will be discussed along with membership information. After the meeting, John Winterhawk (Muscogee Creek Medicine Keep-er) will play his flute and share stories.


GLOBES meeting
GLOBES (Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees and Supporters) will meet at 7 p.m. on April 8 in room 144 of the Tate Student Center to discuss upcoming events, including the first All-Athens Pride Picnic at Lake Herrick Beach on May 3. All are invited.


IBR presentation
The Institute for Behavioral Research will sponsor a presentation on the Center for Research on Deviance and Behavioral Health Colloquium on April 13 at 2 p.m. in room 138 of the Tate Student Center. The session will be led by Robin Room of the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto, Canada, and Lee Kaskutas of the Alcohol Research Group at the University of California at Berkeley.


WebCT, Web workshops
During spring quarter, the Office of Instructional Support and Development and University Computing and Networking Services will offer workshops using WebCT and creating and editing instructional web pages. Sagan Society
The first meeting of the Sagan Society is April 17 at 3:30 p.m. in room 141 of the Tate Student Center.

A new faculty-staff organization devoted to rationalism and the objective discussion of contemporary issues, the Sagan Society plans to serve as a rationalist resource for students and the local media. Monthly meetings will include faculty presentations. The adoption of the society's constitution, election of officers and the goals of the group will be discussed at the inaugural meeting. Phi Beta Delta nominations
Phi Beta Delta, an honor society for international scholars, is accepting membership nominations until April 24 for faculty, staff and students who have made significant contributions to international education and exchange at UGA.

This includes research, teaching, program development and services or significant accomplishments, honors or awards in international affairs. Both international and American faculty and staff are eligible. Those selected for membership will be notified by mail and inducted at a ceremony on June 2. Teaching, learning group
The Office of Instructional Support and Development will establish a teaching-learning group during spring quarter to enhance the teaching effectiveness of faculty.

Group members will be introduced to current information about teaching and learning in higher education, develop skills to investigate teaching-learning and apply new knowledge and skills to current teaching situations. Topics to be investigated include planning and organizing for teaching, effective instructional strategies, assessing teaching and learning and documenting teaching effectiveness.

Several weekly meetings will be scheduled during the quarter, and participation in the group will require about as much commitment as a two-credit hour course.

Group members will investigate specific topics before each meeting, discuss topics with other participants and apply principles learned to their classes.

Program volunteers
The Summer Opportunities Program needs volunteers. A three-week program for rising ninth graders from Clarke County schools, the Summer Opportunities Program is designed to promote the importance of completing high school, demonstrate the connection between education and employment and to enhance the connection between the community and students.

Volunteers will chaperone students during classes and tours and allow students to spend time with them at work. Speakers who will promote the importance of education also are needed.
