The UGA Athletic Association has announced the establishment of
a new professorship in horticulture that will bear the name of retired
Athletic Director Vince Dooley, pending approval by the University
System of Georgia Board of Regents at their August meeting.
President Michael F. Adams, chairman of the Athletic Association
board, made the announcement during the group’s annual spring
meeting.
The Vincent J. Dooley Professorship in Horticulture will be established
during the 2004–05 academic year.
The Athletic Association has designated $250,000 from contributions
it has recently made to establish the professorship. In past years
the association has contributed more than $2 million to a fund that
supports non-athletic academic programs at the university.
“We are particularly pleased the Athletic Association designated
resources to establish a professorship honoring Coach Dooley,”
says Gale Buchanan, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences. “Such a professorship honors a man of many talents.
While his many accomplishments in athletics are widely known, this
professorship recognizes his commitment and long-standing support
of academic pursuits.”
Dooley has long been known as an avid gardener and even has a species
of hydrangea—the Hydrangea macrophylla Dooley—
named after him.
