Students moved into Brumby and Russell residence halls last week prior to the beginning of fall semester classes.

Fresh perspective: UGA enrolls its most academically prepared class

The 4,495 freshmen who began classes at UGA this past week represent the most academically prepared entering class in UGA history, according to preliminary statistics released by Nancy McDuff, associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management.

The entering class presented an average high school grade point average of 3.72, besting the record set in 2002 of 3.71, and an average SAT score of 1237, compared to the previous high of 1215, also set in fall 2002. Some 900 members of the entering class had a perfect 4.0 high school GPA.

Utah State official named CIO at UGA
Barbara A. White, who oversees information technology services at Utah State University, has been chosen to head the unit that manages information technology and computer support services at UGA.

Buying power of largest U.S. minority groups on the rise
A report on minority buying power released earlier this month by the Selig Center for Economic Growth at UGA’s Terry College of Business also projects that disposable income controlled by minorities will continue growing at a faster rate than that of white households at least through 2009.
University’s external research funding increases more than 6 percent
UGA’s external research funding grew 6.8 percent during the 2004 fiscal year, totaling a record $159.9 million, compared with $149.8 million received in the previous year. Research support at UGA has increased 56.8 percent during the past five years, according to Gordhan L. Patel, vice president for research and associate provost. This funding consists of contracts, grants and agreements from federal, state and corporate sources as well as from private funding agencies.
Jimmy Williamson heads up university’s police department
James E. (Jimmy) Williamson, assistant chief of UGA’s police department for eight years, has been named the university’s new police chief.
Daniels named associate dean in social work
Maurice Daniels, professor and director of the master’s in social work program, has been named associate dean of the School of Social Work, pending Board of Regents approval.
Committee named to help choose new dean and director
A 23-member committee has been formed to conduct a national search for the next dean and director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
