Betty White |
Barbara A. White, who oversees information technology
services at Utah State University, has been chosen to head the unit
that manages information technology and computer support services
at UGA.
White will become associate provost and chief information officer
Oct. 1, pending approval by the University System of Georgia
Board of Regents. She will succeed Dennis Calbos, who has held the
position on an interim basis for the past year.
White will direct Enterprise Information Technology Services, the
unit responsible for operation and support of the extensive network
of computing and data communications functions that support research,
administrative and student services.
White has been vice president of information technology and chief
information officer at Utah State since 2001. She joined the university
in 1999 as dean of information and learning resources and chief
information officer. She is also a professor of instructional technology
in Utah State’s College of Education.
White has extensive experience in distance education and use of
information technology for instruction. She has led several major
information technology initiatives at Utah State, including a plan
for campus core information technology resources. She is also responsible
for the host site of the Utah Educational Network satellite system
at Utah State.

the CIO and associate provost at UGA,” says Arnett Mace, senior
vice president for academic affairs and provost. “Her expertise
in strategic planning, budgeting, data management and distance learning
are strengths essential for this position. In addition, Barbara
possesses superb administrative and interpersonal skills.”
EITS is responsible for all computer services, network communications,
management information services, financial information systems and
student information systems that support teaching, research and
service at UGA.
At Utah State, White led efforts to bring information technology
infrastructure, architecture and services operating throughout the
campus into a unified and coordinated organizational structure based
on an enterprise model. She also led a team in developing a strategic
plan for allocating information technology services and resources.
White earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State
University, a master’s degree from Utah State and a doctorate
from Montana State in adult, community and higher education. She
is a graduate of the Harvard University Institute for Educational
Management.
