Response to overtime laws studied
Changes to federal labor and wage laws that went into effect this month redefine the “white collar” exemption test that determines whether employees should be paid overtime. One such change automatically grants overtime pay to employees earning less than $23,660 a year when they work more than 40 hours in a week. The previous cutoff amount was $8,060. Some colleges may consider reclassifying employees or assigning new or different job responsibilities to keep employees exempt from overtime.

Faculty strike in Quebec
Nearly 200 professors and librarians from Bishop’s University in Quebec went on strike following the breakdown of negotiations between the administration and the association that represents faculty at the university. The faculty have complained that student enrollment has increased while faculty size has decreased, creating larger classes and preventing the kind of personalized teaching once prized by the university. Most classes were cancelled while the strike was in progress, while a few were taught by non-striking deans. A settlement was reached a week and a half later and classes resumed earlier this month.
