 |
New insurance professorship named for alumnus Dan Amos | |

The professorship, named the Amos Distinguished Professor of Insurance, will be in the college’s department of insurance, legal studies and real estate. It will be held by a national authority in the field of insurance education. “Dan Amos has been a strong supporter of the University of Georgia and the Terry College of Business for many years, and it is fitting that his legacy be preserved with this professorship,” says President Michael F. Adams. “Support such as this is making UGA one of America’s best public universities, and we are deeply grateful.” The endowment for the position is made possible by a gift from the Daniel P. Amos Family Foundation. Amos received a bachelor’s degree in risk management and insurance from UGA in 1973. AFLAC is the leading provider of individual insurance policies offered at the worksite in the United States, and insures more than 40 million people worldwide. It has more individual policies in force in Japan than any other company, insuring one out of four Japanese households. “Dan Amos is one of the most respected leaders in the insurance industry in America, and the Terry College is honored to have a professorship in his name,” says P. George Benson, dean of the college. “The person who holds this professorship will not only enhance the academic stature of our risk management and insurance program, but will also help our students appreciate the importance of knowledge, commitment and personal integrity and social responsibility, traits that are hallmarks of Dan’s successful career.” Amos joined AFLAC in 1973 after graduating from UGA. He became president in 1983, chief operating officer in 1987, CEO of AFLAC Inc. in 1990 and chairman in 2001. Under his leadership the company’s revenues have grown from $2.7 billion to more than $11.4 billion. Forbes magazine this year ranked AFLAC one of the top 25 “power brands” in the United States, based in large part on the success of the company’s popular AFLAC duck advertising campaign, which Amos launched. Amos is also known for a management philosophy that emphasizes employee support and corporate citizenship. |
