Carolyn N. Belcher, public service
assistant in the Marine Extension Service, has been appointed vice-chair
of the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council’s science
and statistical committee.

Benson |
George Benson, dean of the
Terry College of Business, has been appointed to the board of overseers
for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The board of overseers
advises the director of the National Institute of Standards and
Technology and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce on the conduct of
the Baldrige Award program and on how well it is serving the national
interest. Benson previously served a three-year term as one of nine
national Baldrige Award judges.
The Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987 to improve
performance in U.S. organizations. Awards are made to organizations
that have substantially benefited the economic or social well-being
of the United States through improvements resulting in performance
excellence. Benson’s term of service will continue through
February 2007.

Vince Dooley |
Vince Dooley, former athletic
director, received the 39th James J. Corbett Memorial Award from
the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. The
award, the highest honor one can receive in collegiate athletics
administration, is presented annually by the NACDA officers and
executive committee to the collegiate administrator who “through
the years has most typified Corbett’s devotion to intercollegiate
athletics and worked unceasingly for its betterment.” Corbett,
athletics director at Louisiana State University, was NACDA’s
first president in 1965.
Jay Harriman, associate director
of the Office of Instructional Support and Development and an adjunct
faculty member in the instructional technology department, is president
of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.
An international organization, AECT is the oldest group in the United
States dedicated to design and technology for teaching, learning
and performance in education, government and the private sector.
Jenny Penney Oliver, director
of academic initiatives in the College of Education, has been elected
to the board of directors of the Georgia chapter of the National
Association for Multicultural Education.
Oliver was elected to a three-year term on the nine-member statewide
board. Board members provide leadership for the committees of the
organization, such as membership, nominations, annual state meetings
and conferences and publications. In addition, Oliver has been selected
to co-chair the national 2005 NAME conference in Atlanta.
Head baseball coach David Perno
was named national coach of the year by both Baseball America and
CollegeBaseballInsider.com. Perno led the 2004 baseball team to
their second-best season in school history, which included a third-place
finish at the College World Series, a share of the Southeastern
Conference title, the SEC Eastern Division crown and a final season
record of 45-23.
