Fundamentals of Ecology
By Eugene P. Odum and Gary W. Barrett
$100.95
Thomson Brooks/Cole

New edition of ecology text published

In 1953, Eugene P. Odum published the first edition of Fundamentals of Ecology. At the time of his death on Aug. 10, 2002, he and Gary W. Barrett, Odum Professor of Ecology, had just submitted a draft of the fifth edition for review.

This book retains the classic holistic approach to the field of ecology, even adding new chapters at higher levels of organization such as landscape, regional and global, while attempting to balance concepts and approaches in evolutional biology, such as metapopulation dynamics, neutral theory and population genetics.

This book also weds economic capital (goods and services provided by the human work force) with natural capital (goods and services provided by natural ecosystems).

The authors provide a rich history of ecology—Odum being a pioneer in the field of ecosystem ecology—as well as updating major concepts, mechanisms, and principles in the field. Barrett hopes that the fifth edition will help future generations to appreciate the significance of understanding ecological principles in their decision-making process, just as the second edition of this seminal work had a profound influence on his career and understanding.
